Bamboo fabrics are often sold as soft, breathable, and low impact on the environment. But what many people don’t realise is that there are actually a few different ways to turn bamboo into fabric, and not all of them are created equal.
Some methods rely heavily on chemicals, while others take a more natural approach being more gentler on the environment. The three main types you’ll come across are bamboo viscose, bamboo lyocell, and mechanically processed bamboo.
While viscose and lyocell are far more common, it’s the mechanically processed option, sometimes called “true bamboo fabric”, that really shines for those who want the purest bamboo fabric.
With so many different processes out there, we thought it was the perfect time to break things down and show you exactly how our custom bamboo fabric comes to life.
Bamboo Viscose
The most common type of bamboo fabric you’ll find on the market is bamboo viscose, which is technically a type of rayon. To create it, bamboo pulp is chemically broken down and then reformed into fibres. The result is a fabric that feels soft and smooth, much like rayon made from other plant-based sources such as wood or eucalyptus. While popular for its comfort and affordability, the chemical-heavy process means it is not always the cleanest option on the market.
Bamboo Lyocell
Bamboo lyocell is produced using a more environmentally friendly process than viscose. It relies on a non-toxic, closed-loop system to dissolve the bamboo pulp, meaning the solvent used is continually recycled rather than discarded. This makes it a more sustainable option, and it also allows the fabric to retain more of bamboo’s natural properties. Bamboo lyocell tends to be softer, more breathable, and better for the environment compared to viscose, though it is usually less common.
Mechanically Processed Bamboo Fibre
Mechanically processed bamboo fibre is the rarest and most expensive form of bamboo fabric—but also the most natural. Instead of chemicals, this method uses mechanical processes to break the bamboo into fibres that can be spun into fabric. Because of this, it preserves far more of the plant’s natural qualities, earning it the nickname “true bamboo fabric.” Although it’s not as widely available, it is the most chemical free choice.
Which Method Does Lou Lou Bamboo Fabric Embrace?
We’ve chosen to work exclusively with mechanically processed bamboo fibre. Over time, we’ve refined this method to develop our own custom fabric, crafted specifically for Lou Lou pieces. The result is a textile of superior quality, which naturally comes with a higher price point but also delivers exceptional comfort and longevity.
Because of this process, we can confidently label our garments as 92% Bamboo, rather than “Bamboo Viscose” or similar terms often used by other brands. Those labels indicate fabrics made from bamboo viscose or bamboo lyocell, which involve chemical processing methods.
By contrast, mechanically processed bamboo fibre is created by crushing the raw bamboo and applying natural enzymes to gently break down the plant’s cell walls. The resulting fibres are combed out and spun into yarn without the use of harsh chemical solvents. The finished fabric is breathable, durable, and luxuriously soft.
We embrace a highly detailed five step process:
1. The woody part of the bamboo plant is crushed into smaller pieces.
2. Natural enzymes are used to decompose the bamboo cell walls, breaking them down into a mushy mass.
3. Mechanical forces are then applied to pull apart the natural fibres from the rest of the plant material.
4. The separated fibres are combed to further refine them.
5. Then the refined fibres are spun into yarn and then woven into fabric.
The Custom Lou Lou Fabric Difference
Our signature mechanically processed bamboo fabric is unlike any other. This method is considered to be a more chemical free choice, as it avoids the use of harsh chemical solvents. Unlike chemical-based processes such as those used to produce bamboo rayon, it provides a far more environmentally gentle option.
The resulting fabric is naturally breathable and features a unique texture, making it comfortable to wear and appealing in both look and feel. Beyond its comfort, the fabric is also durable, offering strength and longevity that ensures it stands up to regular use.
